Shelby – The Brave Little Pup of San Simeon Bay

Julia Stanert loves the California Coast and this book emerged from her experience with an elephant seal pup in San Simeon Cove in 2008. Seeing the pup alone on the beach touched her soul and inspired her to tell, in verse, Shelby’s fictional story.

The original illustrations by artist Jayne Koontz include landmarks such as San Simeon Pier, Piedras Blancas Lighthouse and Hearst Castle. Fun elephant seal facts along with a map of elephant seal rockeries are included in the book. San Simeon Cove is only a few miles south of the elephant seal rockery at Piedras Blancas, which is visited by around 16,000 elephant seals annually.
